Which Celebrities have you met?

Every now and again we are surprised by celebrities appearing at our events. When the bookings are made, we have no idea that any celebrity or VIP is on the guest list or involved in the planning of the event, then suddenly in the middle of a song you see someone that you recognise and its like wow! Has this ever happened to you at a party or VIP event and was it a celebrity that you liked?

We did an event a few years ago at Penshurst Place and there were so many celebrities at the reception, it was just amazing. Rory Bremner made a point of coming over to say how much he liked the music. At another event, Ricky Gervais came over and spoke to the steel band. We also met Emma Bunton at a wedding, plus Sol Campbell and Ainsley Harriott, but the biggest surprise was when David Cameron suddenly appeared at a party. I spoke to him for a few minutes which was very nice. I also had backstage passes at concerts and met Gabrielle, Sting and other celebrities, but my list is short compared to other musicians that I know. So, how long is your list of celebrities that you have met and which three celebrities would you really like to meet? What would you have said to the PM if you suddenly met him at an event?
The three people that I would really like to meet are Oprah, Tyra and Jet Li. There are also some corporate VIP's that I would like to meet, such as Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams and Larry Page. Do you also have inspirational people that you would like to meet?

2012 is going to be an exciting year with lots of events and parties. There is the Queen's Jubilee, the UEFA European Football Championships, the Olympic Games in London and many more events during the year. For this reason, bookings for service providers need to be made early to secure the best bands, catering, marquee hire, photographers, firework technicians or any attractions for your event. There are many benefits to planning a destination wedding and I will not endeavour to cover those in this blog. Instead, I would like you to consider 2 things. The beach featured in most of the video was Grace Bay in TCI (Turks & Caicos Islands) it is one of the best that I have been to and is also amongst the top 5 beaches in the world. I would also recommend the Palm Island resort in the Grenadines which has a fantastic beach with warmer waters than TCI and easy access to many other Islands. Two of our clients were actually married on Palm Island resort and were searching online to hire a steel band for the wedding reception music in the U.K. When I told them of my connection to the Island, they were amazed. They then started to go into details of all the places that they had visited and I was delighted to share stories.

There are a plethora of great options for wedding music to complement your theme. In this brief post we simply ask the question; which options do you think will work best on the day?

There are a number of key stages during the event where you need to make a decision on the style of music or choice of song and this requires a certain amount of preparation and planning.

Many weddings have a champagne reception after the ceremony and then a wedding breakfast, whilst some do not. It is really a matter of personal preference.

Some champagne receptions are more like a party whilst others are relaxed. Our top tip is to ensure that the champagne reception does not continue for too long whilst your guests are getting hungry. Also, try to avoid having too many staged photos which interrupt the flow of the reception.

If used effectively, a Networking event will generate new leads, new contacts and new business. First, you need to plan a great event.

Welcome drinks and light entertainment works wonders at a networking event.

Always choose an interesting venue which is fit for the purpose and scale of your event. Your guests can easily have a negative subliminal response if they were not impressed with any of the features of your Networking event. On the other hand, if you do everything correctly and make a great impression, this will inspire your guests. Weddings in the Autumn.

I recently asked the question, How many people prefer getting married in the Autumn?

What is the fascination with getting married in the Autumn? Is the idea simply to reduce the cost because the summer prices are more expensive? Is it more picturesque having all the Autumn leaves on the ground? Are the honeymoon options cheaper? What's the strategy?

The best answer that I received was:

I would mostly like to get married in spring.
It's true most people chose autumn. I think it's mix of everything you said and tradition in some countries , also maybe summer is too hot for weddings. (From Mrs. Djokovic)

This was the closest to answering the full question. Autumn is popular, but the summer season is the busiest for weddings. There seems to be more wedding shows and exhibitions in Sep/Oct. Our live band also reduces the rate in Oct/Nov, except for the key dates that everyone is chasing.

I would love to hear your views on this, especially if you are planning to get married this Autumn. Also, if you have never thought of using a steel band for your reception drinks at an indoor venue, I can tell you that the 3 piece acoustic band will be an excellent option. Parties get better and better!

People are getting better at hosting parties!

Maybe it is simply the influence of many reality shows, maybe there are a number of other factors, but, the parties that we have performed at this year have been more interesting and exciting. From the moment that you arrive, the emphasis seems to be on service. The smaller parties with 30 to 40 guests have all had waiters in place to serve drinks followed by canapes. This was the same at a party with just 5 guests in a private marquee; the host wanted to treat his friends to lunch with champagne, sea food and steel band music. We also covered some larger parties for lawyers and finance companies, again from the start to finish, the service flowed seamlessly. The catering companies were focused with a mission priority to ensure a continuous flow of drinks and food, the crews were just brilliant.

At each event, our mission is very similar; to provide a quality sound which creates the perfect ambience for the party. In the example with the 5 guests, we employed a very refined mezzo piano approach which was very successful. Our clients are given an assurance when booking that the sound level will be fit for the purpose and the steel band maintains that discipline during the event.

What makes a great party?

There are 3 basic elements that determine if your party will be a success; quality food, drinks and music. If you are serving canapes, always insist on having a good selection and always remember to get ice to chill your drinks, especially for a summer event.
If you are having a summer treat for your staff and use a catering company for a barbecue, avoid hiring the cheapest.

The last thing that you need is lots of smoke and poor quality food; or a crew that cannot keep up with the demand.

You can easily tell if the guests enjoyed it simply by walking around and looking at how much they have left on their plates.

After covering many wedding events, we would like to share our thoughts on the wedding venues that make it into our top 10. These are some of the best wedding venues in the U.K. and I have given a brief explanation.

1. Chewton Glen. The steel band covered a celebrity wedding there last year and from the moment that you enter the grounds you can see that they pay serious attention to every detail.
2. Longstowe Hall. This venue is very well presented and has some of the finest grounds that we have seen. The steel band sets up under a special archway and this just enhances the sound.
3. The Elvetham. The steel band is often hired for wedding music at this venue. It was hard to find using the local signs and your guests will have the same problem, however, the grounds are magnificent and picturesque.
4. The Roof Gardens. This is one of the best roof top venues in the capital. It is the best venue for wedding music in London using a steel drum band as the garden decor and acoustics are complementary to the live sound of the drums.
5. Pennyhill Park. This venue understands luxury and it is evident from the moment that you arrive. It has a great welcoming feel. We covered a wedding there last year with the 3 piece steel band and everything was fantastic.
6. Brocket Hall. This magnificent venue has many options for a wedding reception and a fantastic lake in the middle of the grounds. The steel band has been there many times for weddings and a birthday party. It also has a great restaurant overlooking the lake.
7. Queens Eyot. This is a unique wedding venue on a private Island on the River Thames upstream from Windsor. Many clients have hired the steel band for weddings at this fantastic venue.
8. Buxted Park. This is a very good wedding venue with competent service. Whatever you ask for, they get it for you straight away. That's what we remember about Buxted Park from the 3 weddings that the steel band has covered at this venue.
9. Middle Temple. This is a gem in the heart of central London. The steel band has covered weddings and corporate receptions for Lawyers at this venue which overlooks the Thames.
10. Newlands Hall. This is one of our favourite wedding venues in Essex. Their clients just love to have a steel band weddings. This is not a grand venue, but they have refined the art of hosting wedding events.

Themed parties are great fun. Many clients have combined the steel drum band with unusual themes like a Toga Party. Other clients would hire a steel band for parties with a Pirate theme, Hawaiian/Caribbean theme or general beach theme. This is where Big Sand has been most effective as a stimulus to create an inspiring carnival atmosphere at the start of the event. Below is a 21st birthday party that we did in Harpenden, see if you can work out the theme.

If you are having a special children's party with inflatable attractions, etc, one of our clients included the steel band to conduct a mini workshop for the kids to test their skills on the drums. This lasted for around 30 minutes and the band continued performing whilst they had fun with all the bouncy features. Going forward, further refinement is still needed to convince more wedding planners and venues that this option can meet the standard to impress the most discerning clients. Fast forward, 5 years and it would be great to see more steel drum bands and steel bands in London and other cities providing a professional service as a business and competing with the traditional bands at the highest levels with the main driver being wedding music.

The wedding and party sector is enormous and there are many alternatives for clients to choose from when planning a wedding reception, corporate entertainment or a private party. Big Sand has developed and nurtured its client base by maintaining a service standard and is used successively by the same clients who know what they are getting from this band. The same roadmap can be used by any other steel band/steel drum band/steel pan band to develop a sustainable business model. However, to compete at the highest levels, we have learnt that it takes much more than having one tick in one box.
